On Islamization in Revolution

Syrian Revolution appears superficially as an « Islamic revolution », unfortunately this idea occupy minds. From the beginning, Syrian authority has worked to reveal the Islamic character of the movement against it, even produced a full discourse on that, supported by fabricated videos and many rumors from multiple sources. It was clear that it wants to characterize the revolution by this trait for many reasons; for intimidation religious minorities, in particular Alween, in order to ensure their cohesion behind the authority, which depend on the sectors of them to protect itself. At the same time, to confuse all sectors those refuse religious authority.

Media played a dangerous role, especially Aljazeera and Al-Arabiya TV (and even the BBC, France 24), which were also focusing on the Islamic « trait » of revolution, to the extent, we could say, that they were as « ideological » system of Muslim Brotherhood and Salafis. They were seeking on focusing on « Islamization » of the revolution, in an effort to serve the interests of some countries; to confirm the discourse of the Authority through showing it as an Islamic discourse. Here comes the role of Saudi Arabia, which pushed Adnan Alaro’ur, salafi sheikh to attract young revolutionaries, while the authority was circulated his fatwas to atone Shiites and Alawees in order to fabricate these fatawas as the farawas of revolution.

As well as the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood were interesting in the authority fabrication to confirm that the revolution is Islamic (and even of Muslim Brotherhood), and intimidation of religious minorities in order to keep the revolution as « Sunni », and in this would be the victory way , as they thought. And because they are betting on the imperialist intervention, did not pay attention to the role of religious minorities, on the contrary, they decided to exclude them. The Muslim Brotherhood websites, which published from outside Syria, were exuding retaliatory sectarian discourse, as if they want to take revenge for what happened 1980 / 1982 of brutal violence practiced by the authority against Hamah City, despite that the Muslim Brotherhood were responsible for the explosion of sectarian conflict against the authority make it retaliates from all society and destroys all political parties. This appreciation has become part of the young revolutionaries’ consciousness (especially in Hamah).

The authority has continued, since two years, reiterates the same address that what is happening is the movements of armed gangs, fundamentalist terrorist groups, of Muslim Brotherhood. Despite all what has been revealed during the revolution, the regime remained at the same pace, where no other option. In the first six months, Muslim Brotherhood’s voice was low, and tried to move other forces forward, some liberals, in order to change the revolution context from popular to Islamic. After that, while encouraging the tendency to arming, especially after the rise of violence by the authority, they began to raise their voices, where the media speech (through Aljazeera channel), and Muslim Brotherhood’s speech has clarified, who wants to confirm that the revolution is an Islamic revolution and deems continuation of the « revolution » at the end of the 1970s and early 1980s. they worked to control naming the Fridays name, imposing fundamentalist name, despite all objections. A year after the revolution began, their activities were become « independent » on the ground, and their rhetoric was gossipy.

Therefore, almost all parties want to Islamize the revolution, some in order to get the power and revenge (Muslim Brotherhood here), others for failing revolution, and others without any awareness and knowledge.

But this is part of the picture, the « voluntary » part, the part of letter of « conscious » force want to generalize its logic. In fact, another context has created different completely, imposing “Islamization », « Islamization » is different from what the authority, Muslim Brotherhood, Gulf media imperialist discourse want. Here we’ll touch the revolution itself, as people fight and struggle against the authority, spontaneously, without ideology or political affiliation (or even whitout political awareness, as a result of tyranny).

It should be noted that the crisis, experienced by young people in particular and the society in general, and the absence of employment opportunities, low pay, lack of need for education because it leads to unemployment, the crisis of marriage, housing, health care, impose to arise generations of young people who felt the disability for exceeding their crisis. If some of them had escaped to the « dalliance » and nonchalance, especially with using Internet, they ignored politics, another section escaped to religion, where it is needed to the spiritual life as a reaction to their miserable life. This section included the categories of the unemployed, and those who have left school already before the completion of the study, and those educated and did not find work, or of those whose income is insufficient for human habitation. All of them from impoverished people.

This situation created a large sector of religious youths, but without ideology, i.e. popular religiosity. If the “dalliance” young people were the first to move and push in the direction of the revolution, and played a great role in early stages, impoverished people has become the basis of following stages, as a result of expansion of the revolution and the escalating violence by regime. For these reasons, the « Islamic character » was clear to some extent.

This is the general framework emerged from the activity of religious popular classes in the revolution, their role have expanded after the strong strikes to the elites, which carried the burden of first stage. But we must note that the authority’s speech, which accuses the revolution as Salafi, and of Muslim Brotherhood was facing rejected by the people. For that people raised the slogans of « no Salafi, no Muslim brothers », and « We do not want a state of brothers, we want civil state ». In the context to unmask the authority’s speech, and the confirmation on the real nature of the revolution, Youth struggle to deny the authority discourse, confirming that what is happening is a popular revolution. Later, the violence pushes them to adopt « speech of regime »; through the transition to Islamization. The violence and cruelty of authority imposed that challenge appears fully from the people and say that we are as you describe and we well fall you down. Here go « popular awareness » from the refusal of the speech to embodying it as reality.

Does this mean that these people are with the Muslim Brotherhood or Salafis or « Jihadists »?
Despite the consensus that has been achieved between the Muslim Brotherhood’s address, Salafis, and a large sectors of young revolutionaries, , but the difference is great between them. Despite the fact that this tendency to armed young people had been linked to the need for armament and money which has become clear that the Muslim Brotherhood are those who control it, it is, in essence, come as a form of the challenge of the authority, and this time, with all the dangers that carried by the military action. This difficult military situation has led to get the support from the Muslim Brotherhood, and thus to accept the nomination of Islamic brigades, without that don’t mean that the militants had become Muslim Brotherhoods, on the contrary, it appeared that most of them are not religious, or exactly not ideological and not interesting in brotherhood project.

What we are saying is that this Islamization is not Brotherhood’s ideology, and is not in favor of their policy, although they have worked to exploit it to show « power » and « control ». Therefore, we are not afraid of this Islamization, which we know its causes, and we know that it is not an ideology, but a form of challenge, and all practicers do not emanate from the sectarian or religious perspective in their struggle against the authority, but from the perspective of confrontation the authority as a result of blockage imposed by the regime.
